JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER

Hello Friends!

Welcome to the June 2018 edition of BUSHLIFE NEWS, the official newsletter of Bushlife Conservancy, a US 501(c)(3) dedicated to protecting African wildlife.

First, we want to say THANK YOU to our generous donors who have kept our operations funded over the past few months.
Now that the dry season is upon us, we also want to bring you up to speed on what we've been doing to protect the elephants and other wildlife of Zimbabwe, what our plans are for the months ahead, and how you can help us continue to reach our goals.

OUR ANTI-POACHING PATROLS CONTINUE TO SAVE ELEPHANT LIVES!
We continue to see a sharp reduction in poaching incidents, as a result of our ongoing Anti-Poaching Patrols. Thankfully, we have managed to make it through another rainy season without a single report of an elephant carcass in Mana Pools! However, we have had recent reports indicating increased poaching in the areas just outside the Park.  Poachers from Zambia continue to cross the Zambezi River near the western boundary of the Park.  We have also learned that there are at least a dozen poaching camps found in the Sapi area to the east of Mana Pools.  We hope to expand our remote operations to cover these areas as well, provided we can raise sufficient funds.  Each Anti-Poaching Patrol costs $8,000/month (for food, fuel, vehicle maintenance and repair).  Please consider making a Recurring Donation to ensure we can continue this necessary work and expand to cover new areas now under threat!
Our biggest challenge continues to be the need to maintain and repair our patrol vehicles, which take a terrible beating on the unpaved remote roads. Recently, three out of four of our vehicles were down for repairs and awaiting spare parts, which made it difficult to adequately support the rangers stationed in remote camps.  We hope to have all four vehicles back in operation shortly and to get our patrols back up to full strength.  But your donations are critically necessary to keep these vehicles on the road!
Please  DONATE GENEROUSLY to support our critically important and effective Anti-Poaching Patrols!

OUR INVESTIGATION TEAM CONTINUES TO HAVE GREAT SUCCESS!

Thanks to our generous donors, we were recently able to put a new Investigations vehicle back on the road. As a result, our Investigation Team has had a number of recent successes:

IN APRIL, 3 TRAFFICKERS WERE ARRESTED AFTER SELLING A LOAD OF IVORY TO ZAMBIAN BUYERS. ONE TUSK WAS RECOVERED.

IN MAY, 3 MEN WERE ARRESTED FOR TRAFFICKING IN PANGOLIN. AT LEAST ONE SKIN WAS RECOVERED.

HERE ARE SOME OF THEIR REMARKABLE RESULTS SO FAR*:
  • 172¬†arrests for wildlife offenses¬†¬†-- 75 for illegal possession of pangolin, 91 for illegal possession of elephant ivory.¬†
  • 50+ tusks confiscated
  • 19¬†live pangolin recovered and sent for rehab and reintroduction to the wild
  • 7 firearms confiscated
  • Ivory offenses: ¬†69 sentenced to mandatory 9 year sentences at hard labor
  • Pangolin offenses: ¬†55 sentenced to mandatory 9 year sentences at hard labor
*Based on Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority data regarding Bushlife Conservancy funded operations

It costs us about $2150/month for informant rewards, operational costs, and vehicle support to keep our Investigation Team going.  THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE WAR AGAINST POACHING!  Please help by DONATING NOW!

NEW COMMUNITY WELFARE INITIATIVE -- A SCHOOL BUS FOR THE KIDS!

PART OF OUR MISSION IS TO ENGAGE AND ASSIST MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, IN ORDER TO GIVE THEM A STAKE IN WILDLIFE PROTECTION AND TO GAIN THEIR SUPPORT FOR OUR CONSERVATION GOALS.  RECENTLY, WE WERE  ASKED IF WE COULD ASSIST BY BUYING A SMALL SCHOOL BUS TO TRANSPORT LOCAL KIDS TO AND FROM THE CLOSEST SCHOOL.  RIGHT NOW, THEY MUST RELY ON HITCHING RIDES ON THE BACK OF OPEN PICKUP TRUCKS IN ORDER TO GO THE 40 KM THEY MUST TRAVEL BACK AND FORTH TO SCHOOL EACH DAY!  PLEASE HELP US HELP THESE KIDS -- AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.   THEIR SUPPORT IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE WILDLIFE IN AND AROUND MANA POOLS!
